Mandela Day 2 Medium
The Glassock team worked their magic.

Every year, the date 18 July brings great excitement to South Africans and the rest of the world as we celebrate the birthday of our national hero, Nelson Mandela.Glassock and Associates embarked on a special outreach programme for 2012 to mark the momentous occasion of Madiba’s 94th birthday, and what a rewarding experience it was.

The Glassock team travelled into Tembisa early Wednesday morning to a children’s home, Siyazigabisa Home of Hope, to transform an unused office space into a new playroom for the children.

Siyazigabisa is home to 20 children between the ages of seven and 14, and also feeds and provides a safe aftercare environment for a further 80 children. The home is well run and maintained, but relies entirely on donations and volunteer work to survive.

When we arrived, Gabisile Khoza, who owns the home, greeted us, along with enthusiastic children who were excited to help unpack the generously donated toys. We set to work with our brushes and rollers renovating the dull office space into a multicoloured cheerful playroom. A second team at the office got started on preparing lunch for the children and volunteers. Our 67 minutes of giving back turned into 6 hours and 67 minutes of fun-filled moments, stiff backs and 10 team members covered from head to toe in paint.

It was a pleasure to see the children running around covered in tomato sauce from their hotdogs and the remains of their ice creams. Our overall memory will be their happy, smiling faces. When the paint had dried, the shelves were in place and the final touches weredone, it was time to bring in the toys, books and puzzles. The excitement was mounting and it was hard to keep the children out any longer. One little boy was determined to stay overnight with the new scooter he had become so attached to.

Glassock would like to thank all their staff for working so hard to make the transformation happen.  Stiff and aching muscles aside it will be a day we will all remember for a long time. As Jackie Glassock said: “I was so proud of the teamwork that everyone displayed and that we were able to achieve so much in a relatively short period of time. It is a testament to the special group of people that we have working here.”

Also a special thank you for all the donations. We could not have done it without the generosity from both clients and friends. Thank you, thank you, thank you. We wish you had been there to hear the children sing their thanks for the new playroom. As a parting gift after a long and busy day, we were able to donate a few months’ supply of electricity vouchers, which was much appreciated.

We now find ourselves being able to offer not only financial services but extreme makeover services as well!
